C. S. Cooper, Gold Hill Suicide Victim (1890)
Cooper had lived at Gold Hill about two years and was between twenty-five and thirty years old, with a good reputation and well liked [4]. In early October 1890, after a week-long drinking spree, he sobered up, took a Winchester rifle, and went hunting [1][2]. He entered Al Miller’s tent, asked for water, and lay down; Miller left, then shots were heard and the tent caught fire [3]. Cooper fled into the hills shooting his rifle and acting strangely [3]. He eventually put the rifle muzzle in his mouth and pulled the trigger, killing himself [3][4]. Judge Titus held an inquest [4]. Cooper had no immediate family but left brothers at Willcox and Dos Cabezas [4].
