Captain Keys, Indian campaigner who pursued Ehrman and Riggs killers
He was camped at Lordsburg [4]. Upon hearing of the killing of Williams, he made a night march, took up the trail, and found the bodies of Peter Riggs (two bullet holes through the heart) and Carl Ehrman (shot and head crushed with a stone) [4]. He followed the trail toward the Mexican border until a heavy rain obliterated it [4][3]. Keys had many years of experience in Indian campaigns on the frontier and was thoroughly convinced the depredations had been committed by Apaches [1][3]. Bliss at Fort Bayard that thirty days’ rations had been sent, with instructions to go to Alamo Viejo and scout for Indians; he left Sunday morning [2].
