Carl Ehrman: Pioneer Prospector Killed in Hatchet Mountains

Lead
Carl Ehrman, a pioneer citizen of Deming, New Mexico, was killed by Indians while prospecting in the Big Hatchet Mountains in August 1890. [1][3]

On the day after the killing of Hal Williams near Hachita, Ehrman and Peter Rigg met their fate in the big Hatchet mountains [2][4]. Captain Keys, marching from Lordsburg, found Ehrman's mangled remains on the west side of the mountains [3]. He had been shot and his head mashed in with a large stone [1][3]. Ehrman knew Indians were in the area but had gone prospecting and was doubtless surprised and killed [1]. Gilbert of the Alamo Hueco ranch assisted at his burial [3].
