Conductor Starr, Santa Fe railman killed in 1891 wreck near El Paso
On Tuesday about noon, the engine he was in charge of, carrying two brakemen on the pilot, derailed two miles east of El Paso and demolished the company’s pump-house [4]. Starr likely jumped and was caught under the engine, killing him instantly [2][4]. Mudge suffered severe wounds; engineer McGinnis was injured but ran back to flag an east-bound passenger train, averting a greater catastrophe [2][3].
