He was well-known throughout southern Arizona and addicted to cocaine. [1] The hotel proprietor, Mr. Ricker, discovered his body in a room; Thatcher had used a lancet from his surgical case to cut his left jugular vein, making two incisions, then walked to the bed and bled to death. [1][2]
