Ed Hudson, Cowboy Involved in NAN Ranch Shooting
Harkey and was in charge of the NAN cattle and ranches [5][6]. On December 22, 1888, after a trial was postponed, Ed and his brother Steve left Silver City, with Ed armed with a gun and Steve with a pistol, traveling through Central to the southeast corner of the reservation fence [1][2]. They later encountered McAfee, who was leading one of the NAN horses [5][6]. A confrontation followed in which McAfee was shot and killed; Steve was also wounded [5][6]. Ed, who carried a Winchester, stated that he did not fire [5][6]. The brothers rode to Central and then to Fort Bayard for medical treatment, where Ed was arrested at the hospital and jailed [3][4]. He refused to be interviewed by a reporter, and his preliminary examination was scheduled for the following day [3][4].
