F. P. Whitehill: Grant County sheriff in wood and fund scandal
As sheriff, Whitehill issued a proclamation in 1889 [2]. He failed to pay territorial treasurer any monies due after January 24, 1890, disregarding monthly payment laws [3]. However, his practice of keeping separate public and private accounts was commended [6]. Morehead for it, but the grand jury recommended recovery of the wood or money [7]. Wood was delivered by parties to whom Whitehill paid $2.75 per cord [4]. An attempted robbery at his residence occurred, with Maggie Whitehill firing at burglars [5]. No predecessor left books of accounts in the office [1].
