In December 1889, Frank Lewis (also known as Kid Lewis) killed William Fitzgerald at Carlisle, New Mexico [1]. By September 20, 1889, he was charged with murder [3]. Before this, he had arrived in the United States as the featherweight champion of Europe and lightweight champion of Australia, having defeated Paul Til and Hugnie Mehegan for those titles [2]. He was later acquitted at Las Cruces [1].
