George Metzger (Hubbell Ranch Foreman)
Hubbell’s ranch near Zuni Salt Lakes in Socorro County [2][3]. In January 1891, he arrived in Albuquerque and announced that he had shot and killed Jose Maria Chavez [2][3]. Metzger stated that Chavez had confided a plot to kill a man who threatened to “peach” on him; when Metzger refused to allow such violence at the ranch, Chavez grabbed his rifle and fired, the bullet passing through Metzger’s clothing [1][3]. Metzger then fired and killed Chavez instantly [1][3]. Hubbell’s sheep herders [1][3]. Metzger gave himself up to a Socorro deputy sheriff [1][3].
