George West, horse thief captured on the Gila River
George West is a horse thief arrested alongside Frank Murray on the Gila River in February 1890 [2]. Windham, Steve Nickson, and Frank Richardson captured the pair at Mart Childer’s place, recovering twenty-four horses held in the Bell pasture [2][1]. West and Murray had first stolen horses on the Rio Grande, taken them to Mexico, and returned to Grant County with a band from Mexico, suggesting they “traded” with other thieves [2]. After the capture, West was wanted in Arizona and a $1,000 reward was offered by Arizona parties for his return [3][1].
