Harry Patterson – Waiter Killed in Las Cruces, 1890
Harry Patterson, a waiter well known in Silver City, was shot dead in Las Cruces on a Tuesday morning in 1890 by a Chinese cook named Jo. [1][2] The trouble began when Harry slapped the cook. [1] Jo left the house, borrowed a pistol, bought cartridges, loaded it, and then visited the hotel kitchen. [1] Harry saw him coming and remarked, "Well, Jo, have you returned to work." [1][3] A shot was the reply, and Harry fell dead with a bullet through his brain. [3] The cook walked to a Chinese house, entered, and locked the door. [3] Sheriff Barela soon called for him, and he quietly surrendered. [3]
