J. B. Petrie, Black Range Cattle Company Manager
Petrie was the manager of the Black Range Cattle Company [3]. Cantwell ended with Cantwell losing, and Petrie was alleged to have defeated Cantwell’s chances for appointment as census enumerator of the territory’s stock interests [3]. On the afternoon of June 24, 1890, Cantwell came to a company house, said he would step out to see Petrie, and fired a shot at him, missing [3]. Petrie ran between houses as Cantwell pursued and fired again [3]. James Moore then exchanged shots with Cantwell and was killed [3]. Cantwell testified that Petrie and Moore fired first, and the coroner’s jury returned a verdict of justifiable homicide [2]. Muse to take charge of the outfit [1].
