John Boyle – Superintendent of Mountain Key Mine
Boyle and his brother Richard drew $2,300 from a Silver City bank on April 18, 1890, to pay employees of the Mountain Key mine [3]. As their buggy neared Half Way Rock, masked highwaymen — including Windy Dick Huber and George Robins — rose from the bushes and commanded them to halt [3][2]. John, here is a hold up!” and both brothers opened fire [2]. John Boyle commenced shooting simultaneously, paying no attention to the robbers’ command [2]. The Boyle brothers’ rapid return fire disconcerted the criminals, who had been joined by a third man, Al Mayfield [4]. One of the brothers shot a hole in Windy Dick’s hat [4].
