John W. Graeter: Passenger Who Shot Two on Train No. 53
Miller in 1885 and came from one of the first families of Indiana, estimated to be worth $80,000 [2]. Graeter claimed Meier and Leach had threatened to kill him [3]. He was found lying flat in the car with two pistols by his side, and after a three-quarter-hour standoff, he surrendered when threatened with fire [3]. Graeter was taken to Searcy, where he exhibited signs of insanity, calling on everyone to protect him [1]. He telegraphed for his brother in Vincennes and had over $200, a watch, and jewelry with him [3].
