Maston Emery – Pioneer and Indian Fighter
**Maston Emery, an early pioneer of Grant County, fought Indians alongside Kit Carson and helped open the Dry Cimarron country before dying in poverty on the Mimbres in 1891.** [1]
Emery arrived in this country about 1851 and worked as a trapper and hunter [1]. He fought in Indian conflicts with Kit Carson [1] and through his efforts the Dry Cimarron country was first opened up [1]. Described as a big-hearted pioneer who had thrown away fortunes, he died in poverty at the home of John Perry on the Mimbres [1]. In 1888, while prospecting near the headwaters of the Gila, Emery, then nearly 60 years old, broke his right leg and was carried on a burro to the Rogers ranch for care [2][3].
