Moody, described as an "old man" and "old rascal," lived in a house in the woods [1]. Hardy visited Moody's home, where Moody asked whom Hardy had last seen and whether he had friends in the country; Hardy later believed Moody wished to ascertain if his intended victim would be missed if murdered [1].
