Nicolas Acosta, chief herder killed by Carpio at Three Rivers
He became a warm friend of Roman Chiquito and his family, frequently visiting their tent [1][4]. One afternoon while Roman was absent, Acosta stopped at the tent and was invited by Roman’s two sisters for coffee [5][2]. He unsaddled, leaned his Winchester rifle against a tree, and lay down outside with his head on his saddle [5][2]. While the sisters prepared coffee inside, they heard a rifle shot and rushed out to find their brother Carpio, eyes blazing with insanity, holding Acosta’s rifle, with Acosta lying mortally wounded [5][2]. The sisters wrested the rifle from Carpio, who then seized a bow and arrows and fired at them before being disarmed and fleeing to the mountains [6][2]. The sisters carried Acosta to the settlements at Three Rivers, where he corroborated their story before dying [6][2][3].
