Old German: The Suspicious Merchant of 1890s Grant County
Old German was a queer-looking chap with a head as large as a man's, immense ears almost like an animal's, and a spare body muscled like steel, said to be a perfect counterpart of old Geronimo [2]. In misery, he sat in his door at noonday, lonesome and glum, with flies buzzing around him and not a sign of business; he shouted in distress that he was covered with flies [3]. Hardy encountered him, the old man's appearance caused deep distrust, and Hardy heartily feared that entering the barn would mean never coming out alive [1][4]. Hardy made a weak excuse and started down the road, keeping a sharp lookout, and just as he stepped out of view, he saw the old man enter the barn, much enraged [4].
