He lived in Black Hawk [3] and was staying at the Alhambra mine [3]. In 1891, Dodd arrived at the ranch and found Scotty sitting near the door and the two Kerr men—including Barney—lying on a bed, Barney wearing a red shirt with blood on his hands [3].
