P. M. McPherson, Whitewater camper who sprained an ankle fleeing a bear in 1891
Bush in August 1891 [1][2]. Around 21 August 1891, McPherson encountered a bear [4]. Bush, McPherson went up to the source of one of the main prongs of Whitewater to see a spring [3][4]. While making his way through dense bushes and undergrowth, he heard the grunt of a surprised bear lying in a stream, cooling itself [3][4]. Unarmed, McPherson sprang backward, fell over a log into the stream, sprained his ankle, and was badly shaken up [3][4]. He limped into camp without a hat, as white as "ghosts are supposed to be" [3][4]. Bush had set up a job on him [3][4]. The scare, which McPherson said turned a large number of hairs on his head gray, he felt was worse than the ankle injury [1][2][3][4].
