Peter Riggs – Grant County pioneer killed in the Big Hatchet Mountains
Peter Riggs, also known as Peter Rigg, was a pioneer citizen of Grant County who met his fate in the Big Hatchet Mountains on the day following the killing of Hal Williams near Hachita. [1][4] Captain Keys, camped at Lordsburg, made a night march to the scene, took up the trail, and found Riggs's body at Emery Springs with two bullet holes through the heart. [3][2] Riggs was given a hasty burial before the trail was followed onward. [3] The source of the killing is either attributed to Indians or left unknown. [3][1]
