Roman Chiquito: A Mescalero Apache of Peace and Principle
Roman Chiquito was a Mescalero Apache, described as brave, honest, truthful, and a gentleman [2][6]. He was the grandson of the war chief Cadette and the nephew of the peace chief San Juan [6]. From boyhood, his voice and example were on the side of peace; when Victorio swept through southern New Mexico, Roman Chiquito rode day and night to warn settlers near the White and Sacramento mountains [4][6]. Feeling wronged by his tribe, who blamed him for misleading them with false hopes, he resolved to sever his tribal connection [1][7]. He petitioned for land and a cabin to work and earn his own living; though granted, the agent never carried it out [7]. Disheartened, he moved with his family to Three Rivers, thirty miles from the agency, set up a tent, opened a farm, and endeavored to earn his own living [5][7][3].
