Most “discipline” advice fails because it treats effort as a moral problem. But effort is usually a state problem. When you can name the state you’re in and the mechanism holding it, you stop negotiating with yourself and start making small moves that actually shift the system.

The Misclassification

When you can’t do the thing you “should” do, the default interpretation is character: lazy, undisciplined, unmotivated. That interpretation feels plausible because it is simple. It is also usually wrong.
