Sound Mapping
Sound Mapping trains perception by identifying distinct sounds near and far and mentally mapping their location, distance, and texture.
Short Answer
Sit quietly and identify as many distinct sounds as possible—near, far, inside, outside—then map their direction, distance, and qualities in your mind.
How to Do It (3–8 minutes)
- Choose a quiet-ish place where you can sit safely.
- Set a timer for 5 minutes.
- Start with the loudest sound, then look for the next layer down.
- For each sound, note: direction, distance, continuity, texture.
- End by holding the whole “sound field” at once.
What to Notice
- Near vs far sounds (depth).
- Steady vs intermittent sounds (rhythm).
- Harsh vs soft sounds (timbre).
- The moment a sound appears and disappears.
