James Hiler shoots Dr. Mason in Kingston, convicted of murder
Mason in front of the Mountain Pride Hotel in Kingston, killing him almost instantly [6][5]. Hiler had recently returned to Kingston from Texas, where he had been for nine months [5]. He and his wife had arrived in Kingston about two years earlier and purchased the Mountain Pride Hotel with several thousand dollars [5]. Hiler was the father of five young children [1]. He was arrested at once by Constable Johnson and taken to Hillsboro [1]. At trial, Hiler testified he believed the doctor was interfering with his family and that when Mason sprang toward him, he pulled his pistol and fired [2]. Mason and their mother on a bed together [3][4].
