H. J. Hutchinson – Central mining and store owner
Hutchinson owned a store in Central [1][2] and also owned a mine in the same camp [3]. One night that year, the store was entered and robbed of $25 and other valuables [1][2]. Hutchinson, who slept in an adjoining room, was drugged during the burglary and did not regain consciousness until about 7 o’clock the next morning, still too dizzy to walk [1][2]. The thief went through the office and took money from the drawer [1][2]. Sweeney was killed in Hutchinson’s mine when several tons of earth fell on him [3]. The accident was discovered by Sweeney’s son, who was bringing dinner to his father [3]. Sweeney’s funeral was held in Silver City from the Methodist church under Masonic auspices, and the Masons contributed about $250 to his family [3].
