Samuel Beach Axtell – Governor of New Mexico Territory
In 1877, Samuel Beach Axtell served as Governor of New Mexico [2]. That same year, he owned the Una de Gato Land Grant [2]. During a visit to Colfax County, Axtell refused to meet with residents to hear their concerns and instead went with Senator Dorsey to see the Una de Gato Land Grant [3]. He proposed dividing Colfax County, suggesting the Legislature would likely add the western part to Taos County and establish a new county on the east side [1]. Beardsley there was no chance of moving the district courts back from Taos County and instructed him not to contact the Legislature about it [1]. Axtell had previously signed a bill removing the district courts from Colfax County to Taos County [2].
